My mind is spinning ...images of kayak's crossing the screen somehow...in response to choices? mouse clicks? hmmm.. I guess sea kayaking is different than river kayaking...you could make the central theme a piece of coastline with it being a map...and the "areas" of information are points along the coast. That could be the theme behind your navigation system and design. You could have a rotatable kayak "model" which would allow people to see all sides to it (done using QuicktimeVR or java i guess). Maybe just have it utilize javascript mouseovers to where someone would click on regions of the kayak to get a name for the part/region. you could get someone to make a kayaking game...something where they have to maneuver it through caves or rock formations... the background image could be the ocean surface...little riplet waves...
